Adoption

In Pennsylvania, an adoption can occur if the natural parents rights are terminated, and another spouse or family member assumes the parental rights and responsibilities regarding the child. Termination can occur with the natural parent's consent or involuntarily under the statute. The most common section utilized to terminate a parent's rights involuntarily provides that the parent must not have performed parental duties or requested visits for at least 6 months. Termination of parental rights terminates all support obligations. In addition, Pennsylvania now has laws that provide for open adoption.
